Interview with Elijah Lindsay
By Sheila J. Kennedy
How long have you been a photographer? How did you get into it?
I have been a photographer for the last seven years. I got started as a photographer by watching other photographers take pictures of me. Actually, I really started out modeling, doing TV commercials, and one thing led to the other, and I got acting roles. And that's how I got started.
Haven once been a model, does this give you a different perspective when you're taking pictures?
Yes it really does. Haven once been a model, I do have an eye for detail. I know what to look for when I'm shooting models, as far as their poses, and their expressions.
Do you specialize in any particular type of photography?
I really don't specialize in any particular photography; however, I do shoot hair and beauty for hair magazines more than anything else. I also do black and white head shoots, and I shoot weddings quite a bit. But I can honestly say that my favorite is hair, beauty and fashion.
Do you ever photograph children?
I photograph a lot of children.
Do you have to do anything differently when you photograph kids?
When you're photographing kids you have to be patient with them, because kids are kids. They tend not to act like us grown-ups. What I love about kids is that they are natural.
What are some of the magazines that your work been featured in?
Let me start with my covers. I have covers with Shop Talk magazine. It's a hair publication out of Chicago. I don't think they're around now. I've had hair covers in Europe, Black Hair out of England. Try Yourself Hair, in New Jersey, Hype Hair, Braids and Beauty, Hair Styles and Trends, Ultimate Black Hair, and Sophisticates Black Hair.
